Annapurna Circuit or Annapurna Base Camp? How to choose

Trailma Team · Kathmandu, Nepal

Twin snow peaks glowing at dusk above a sea of cloud

Ask three trekkers which Annapurna trek to do and you'll get three answers. The Circuit and the Base Camp (ABC, sometimes called the Sanctuary) are both magnificent, both start within a day of Pokhara, and both use the same Annapurna Conservation Area Permit. Beyond that, they are quite different trips.

Side by side

Annapurna Circuit

  • Distance: about 160–230 km depending on where you start and finish, since road building has shortened the classic route
  • Duration: 12–18 days
  • High point: Thorong La pass, 5,416 m
  • Character: a journey around the massif, from subtropical valleys through Manang's dry Tibetan-influenced landscape, over a major pass and down into the Kali Gandaki gorge and Mustang
  • Difficulty: challenging — the length, the pass day and the altitude

Annapurna Base Camp

  • Distance: about 70–110 km depending on the variant
  • Duration: 7–10 days
  • High point: Annapurna Base Camp, 4,130 m
  • Character: an up-and-back into the Annapurna Sanctuary, a natural amphitheatre ringed by Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre
  • Difficulty: moderate — steep stone stairs and a lot of daily up-and-down, but a lower maximum altitude

Choose the Circuit if…

  • You have two to three weeks and want a genuine journey with changing landscapes and cultures
  • Crossing a 5,000 m pass is on your list
  • You're comfortable with altitude, or willing to plan the acclimatisation days in Manang properly
  • You'd like to add side trips like Tilicho Lake or finish in Jomsom, Muktinath or Upper Mustang

Choose Base Camp if…

  • You have about ten days including travel
  • You want to stand inside a ring of 7,000 and 8,000 m peaks without going above 4,200 m
  • It's your first Himalayan trek and you'd rather keep altitude risk lower
  • You'd like to combine it with Poon Hill for a sunrise on the way in

What they share

Both need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit and a TIMS card. Both are tea-house treks with good food and beds every few hours. Both are best in October–November and March–April; ABC is also fine in winter, while Thorong La can close after snow. And both reward the same preparation — hill fitness, sensible pacing and an honest approach to altitude.

The honest answer

If you have the time and the altitude confidence, the Circuit is the bigger experience. If you don't, ABC is not a consolation prize — it is one of the most dramatic places you can walk to in a week anywhere on earth. Many people do one, then come back for the other.

Both trails are in Trailma with full elevation profiles, so you can compare the two day by day, download the map and track the one you choose.
